St. John Frizell is an award-winning writer, bartender, and owner of Fort Defiance, a critically-acclaimed cafe-bar in Red Hook, Brooklyn. In 2005, Frizell quit his job as promotion copy director of Bon Appétit magazine to travel around the world in the footsteps of Charles H. Baker, Jr, the great early 20th-century food writer and adventurer. When he returned to New York, he learned the art of bartending working with Audrey Saunders at her world-renowned cocktail bar Pegu Club. Frizell's writing on food, travel, and cocktails has appeared in many publications, including Bon Appétit, Gourmet.com, Saveur, Fine Cooking, Islands, Time Out New York, epicurious.com, Oxford American, Edible Brooklyn, and Edible Manhattan, and his work has been collected in the Best Food Writing series. He currently writes a regular drink column for Men's Journal
