St. John Frizell is an award-winning writer, bartender, and owner of Fort Defiance, a critically-acclaimed restaurant in Red Hook, Brooklyn. In 2005, Frizell quit his job as promotion copy director of Bon Appétit magazine to travel around the world in the footsteps of the great Charles H. Baker, Jr. When he returned to New York, he learned the art of bartending working with Audrey Saunders at her world-renowned cocktail bar Pegu Club (and to this day, most of the things he does right behind the bar, he learned from Audrey). Frizell's writing on food, travel, and cocktails has appeared in many publications, including Bon Appétit, Gourmet.com, Saveur, Fine Cooking, Islands, Time Out New York, epicurious.com, Oxford American, Edible Brooklyn, Edible Manhattan, and Al Jazeera Online, and was collected in Best Food Writing 2012. He also writes a monthly column about spirits and cocktails for Men's Journal.
